Woodward’s ProTech TPS is a triple modular redundant safety PLC with integrated overspeed protection for steam, gas and hydro turbines. IEC 61508 SIL-3 certified, API 670 and API 612 compliant. Supplied and supported by NCG.
The ProTech TPS (Total Protection System) is a safety programmable logic controller with integrated overspeed protection. It safely shuts down steam, gas or hydro turbines, engines or any plant process equipment when it detects a safety event such as overspeed, over-acceleration or an abnormal process condition.
The ProTech TPS uses a triple modular redundant architecture with 2-out-of-3 voting. No single-point failure affects reliability or availability: failed switches, transducers or modules are detected, annunciated and can be repaired or replaced while the protected machine keeps running. The device is IEC 61508 SIL-3 certified and compliant with API 670 and API 612.
Total response time is under 12 ms for the independent output models and 20 ms for the 2-out-of-3 voted models. Each of the three modules accepts one speed input (MPU or proximity probe) and 10 discrete or analog inputs, 30 in total, with user-programmable trip, alarm and test logic. Automatic test routines, trip valve health monitoring, trip, alarm and test logs, an internal frequency generator and password protection complete the package.
The ProTech TPS is available for bulkhead or panel mounting, with HV/LV or HV/HV power supplies, and with either two dual-redundant voted trip relay outputs or three independent outputs for use with a 2-out-of-3 trip block (part numbers 8237-2602 to 8237-2609). 4-20 mA speed readouts and Modbus communication make it easy to integrate into a plant safety system. NCG supplies the ProTech TPS and supports its commissioning and testing.
