ProTech TPS

The ProTechTPS is a safety programmable logic controller (PLC) with integrated overspeed protection, designed to safely shut down any plant processing equipment, engine, steam, gas, or hydroelectric turbine when it detects a safety event.

Product description and features

The ProTechTPS uses a triple modular redundant architecture and 2-out-of-3 voting logic to accurately determine hazardous conditions and ensure that no single point of failure affects the reliability or availability of the system. With this design, system faults (switches, transducers, modules) are detected, announced, and can be repaired or replaced while the monitored system continues to operate online.

Designed to safely protect high-speed rotating equipment in critical applications, the total response time of this safety programmable logic controller (PLC) is less than 12 milliseconds for its independent voting output models and 20 milliseconds for its 2-out-of-3 voting models.

Depending on the system design, the ProTechTPS can be purchased with two dual-redundant trip relay outputs using a 2-out-of-3 voting architecture or with three independent non-voted trip relay outputs (typically used for interfacing with a 2-out-of-3 based trip block assembly). Programmable inputs and outputs, 4-20 mA speed displays, and Modbus®* communications make it easy to integrate this safety PLC into any facility safety system or as a standalone safety system function.

The ProTechTPS is available in flush-mount models designed for installation inside the front door of a standard 24″ (610 mm) cabinet, or in models designed for wall or skid mounting near the turbine system. Designed for harsh environments when installed inside an enclosure, the device has an IP56 rating (dust-protected and fully protected against water jets with a force similar to heavy seas).

Built for high reliability, each ProTechTPS module (A, B, C) accepts two high-voltage inputs (90-240 Vac / 100-150 Vdc) or one high-voltage input (90-240 Vac / 100-150 Vdc) and one low-voltage input (18-32 Vdc), depending on the model purchased. This design operates on a high signal selection basis, allowing the device to fully function with either or both available power sources.
