Turbo-generator upgrade

CANTIERI NAVALI RIUNITI 4MW turbo-alternators (GTA) to supply the plant with electricity.

Regulation in place before intervention

The current GTA control system uses various modules:

  • Woodward UG8D mechanical controller
  • 3-way hydraulic pilot
  • A hydraulic cylinder

 

Description of operation:

The setpoint from the control room (+/- fast) is transformed by a stepper motor which drives the mechanical setpoint of the regulator.

The mechanical regulator is a directional valve and therefore modulates the hydraulic pressure of the cylinder.

The hydraulic power cylinder uses a lever system to actuate the turbine’s regulating valves.

NCG intervention

Desired control :

The GTA control system must :

  • Replacement of the UG8D mechanical controller by an electromechanical system
  • Retain the 3-way hydraulic pilot
  • Retain the hydraulic cylinder
  • Make speed regulation reliable (permanent island operation)

Description of operation:

  • The digital speed regulator is controlled by +/- fast contacts which modify its speed setpoint.
  • The controller then acts on an actuator via a current signal (20-160 mA).
  • The actuator moves a directional valve, thus modulating the cylinder’s hydraulic pressure.
  • The hydraulic power cylinder uses a lever system to operate the turbine’s regulating valves.

 

Equipment used: Woodward 505 controllers and Woodward UG-Actuator actuators
