Turbine control modernization

Turbine control modernization: installation and complete upgrade

Normandy Control Group recently carried out a modernization operation on a Turbo-Alternator Group. The aim of this strategic project was to optimize turbine control and regulation through an advanced technological upgrade. By installing new equipment and integrating state-of-the-art control systems, we are meeting the industry’s current demands for precision and durability.

Varistroke actuator installation

for improved control valve management

The first stage of this project involved the installation of a Woodward Varistroke actuator. This actuator offers enhanced precision in the control of regulating valves, essential for reactive and stable management of energy flows within the system.

Integration of the actuator required adaptations on several levels:

  • Mechanical: adjustment of the mounting structure and connections, to ensure immediate response to control signals.
  • Electrical: configuration of the control system to ensure smooth communication between actuator and controller.
  • Hydraulics: optimization of hydraulic flows to maintain constant control of valve movements, ensuring precision in regulation.

Thanks to this installation, the control system reaches a new level of performance, where responsiveness to load changes is significantly improved. This translates into better power regulation, increased energy efficiency and enhanced safety. To ensure complete safety, our teams are equipped with personal protective equipment.

Replacing the Woodward 505 controller with the Woodward 505D model

The upgrade to the Woodward 505D regulator marks a key advance in Turbo-Alternator control. Compared with the 505 model, the 505D offers advanced control features and improved stability, enabling optimum turbine management and reduced risk of disturbance. With the 505D model, real-time control capabilities are enhanced by advanced dynamic tuning and performance monitoring features.

This replacement has made it possible to introduce:

  • Improved management of load fluctuations, limiting undesirable variations in turbine operation.
  • Adaptive control capabilities, guaranteeing precise, stable response under all operating conditions.
  • An optimized interface, simplifying supervision and enabling more intuitive configuration of critical parameters.

By offering stable, precise control, the 505D controller supports reliable, uninterrupted operation, essential for demanding industrial environments.
