STEAM TURBINE MODERNIZATION

Flex 500

CUSTOMER PROBLEMS

SOLUTIONS IMPLEMENTED BY NCG

The NCG engineering office examined the OEM data. The old turbine control logic was developed and mixed with steam turbine logic and a Woodward FLEX 500. New algorithms were developed to secure operation and protect the HP and BP turbine, such as :

  • Start-up safety logic
  • Two separate extraction controls
  • Wheel pressure monitoring and safety logic

Enhanced control algorithms have been developed and extensively tested with customer personnel using Woodward’s proprietary Graphical Application Programming (GAP) software.

Two-speed protection and MPUs were installed to protect both steam turbine shafts (HP and BP). An SPC card was added to control the power piston, and a SIL 3 safety PLC was programmed to monitor and arm the turbine.

Customer personnel received extensive training on Woodward’s FLEX 500 controller and start-up/pre-stop procedures, enabling installation and commissioning to be completed in a very short time.

New controller:

1 x Woodward Flex 500,

1 x Woodward SPC,

1 x Woodward Linknet I/O module

New protection:

2 x Woodward Protech GII

1 x new safety PLC

RESULTS

The customer can now monitor all turbine data. Turbine safety and availability are increased, and we’ve solved the obsolescence problem.
