Retrofit Woodward UG25

Retrofit operation on a starboard propulsion motor

We recently carried out a major technical intervention on a starboard propulsion engine for one of our customers. The aim of the retrofit was to modernize and improve the performance of the propulsion system by replacing a Woodward UG25 model P0 governor with a new-generation UG25+ model P3 governor.

Intervention details

The work began with the removal of the old UG25 model P0 governor, which had reached the end of its life cycle, and its replacement by the UG25+ model P3 governor. This latest version of the Woodward controller offers improved engine control performance, guaranteeing better management of propulsion dynamics.

Our technicians Mohamed and Reggiani, specialists in motor control, adjusted the control cables to suit the specifics of the new model. This ensured optimum installation, in line with Woodward’s technical standards.

Optimization and dynamic testing

After installation, sea trials were carried out to precisely calibrate the controller’s dynamic parameters. These tests adjusted the PID parameters of the controller, directly influencing the responsiveness and stability of the propulsion motor. By optimizing these settings, our technicians were able to ensure that the propulsion’s behavior perfectly met the expectations of the onboard team.

The adjustments made during the tests ensured a smoother ramp-up, a more precise response to speed variations, and greater stability under a variety of sea conditions. This intervention significantly improved the engine’s reliability and overall performance, ensuring smoother sailing for the crew.
