Modernization of 2 turbogenerators

Two Thermodyn and Dresser turbogenerators to power the plant

Regulation in place on GTA-1 before intervention

The current GTA control system uses various modules:

  • Woodward UG40D mechanical controller
  • A modulating hydraulic pilot
  • An “aquarium” module
  • Two hydraulic cylinders (one for steam intake, the second for extraction)

Description of operation:

  • The setpoint from the control room (+/- fast) is transformed by a stepper motor which drives the mechanical regulator setpoint.
  • The mechanical regulator drives an oil modulator which then drives the aquarium.
  • The “aquarium” is a pendulum-type block that receives the power oil. Inlet is controlled by the modulated oil from the UG40, while discharge is controlled by air from the operator’s room.

Regulation in place on GTA-2 before intervention

The current GTA control system uses various modules:

  • Woodward UG40D mechanical controller
  • A modulating hydraulic pilot
  • A hydraulic cylinder
  • Mechanical position cam

Description of operation:

  • The setpoint from the control room (+/- fast) is transformed by a stepper motor, which drives the mechanical regulator setpoint.
  • The mechanical regulator pilots an oil distributor which then pilots the cylinder.

desired control :

GTA control operation must :

  • Replacement of UG40 mechanical controllers by an electromechanical system
  • Remove the Aquarium module from GTA1
  • Retain hydraulic cylinders
Improve reliability of speed control (permanent island operation), load sharing and filling.

Description of operation:

The digital speed controller is fully automatic, from start-up to 1 MW.
The customer then switches the GTAs to island operation, and activates load sharing and extraction on GTA1. At this point, GTA1 maintains frequency and extraction pressure, while TA2 remains in fixed power control.
