Woodward EGB

EGB Woodward

What is an EGB Woodward governor ?

The EGB Woodward is an electro-hydraulic actuator-regulator, designed to provide precise speed and power control on industrial combustion engines, particularly diesel and gas engines. Widely used in critical installations such as generator sets, pumping stations or marine systems, the EGB combines the robustness of a hydraulic mechanism with the flexibility of electrical control.

This controller is renowned in the industry for its ability to convert an electrical signal (from a Woodward speed controller such as the 2301A or 2301E, for example) into a powerful mechanical movement, enabling actuation of a valve, butterfly or motor control lever.

How the EGB Woodward works: a hybrid controller-actuator

This Woodward governor operates on the electrohydraulic principle. It is supplied with oil (via an engine pump or dedicated hydraulic circuit) and receives a DC control signal (often 0-200 mA or 4-20 mA). This signal modulates the position of an internal hydraulic directional valve, which directs the flow of oil to move a piston. This piston drives an output lever, which acts directly on the engine’s intake system.

This technology enables continuous, precise and reliable control, even under extreme conditions of temperature, vibration or load. The system is designed to maintain a constant force, suitable for heavy engines or applications requiring high torque regulation.

Advantages of the Woodward EGB governor

The Woodward EGB offers a number of technical advantages that explain its widespread adoption in the industry:

  • High responsiveness to load variations
  • High output force, ideal for large motors
  • Excellent control stability, even at low loads
  • Long service life, with few sensitive electronic components
  • Close compatibility with Woodward controllers such as 2301A, 2301E or 505

Available in several versions (EGB-10, EGB-13P, EGB-35, EGB-200, etc.), the controller can be sized according to motor power, desired stroke and available oil pressure.

Industrial applications of the EGB governor

EGB Woodward controllers can be found in many key sectors:

  • Power plants (generators, thermal turbines)
  • Oil and gas installations (onshore/offshore)
  • Marine systems (propulsion, on-board auxiliaries)
  • Heavy industry (industrial pumps, compressors, stationary engines)

In all these contexts, the challenge is to guarantee stable, reliable, uninterrupted operation. Thanks to its proven design, the EGB perfectly meets these requirements.
