Our experts were called in to test the islanded mode of an industrial plant and optimize steam control.

Normandy Control Group’s teams recently worked on an industrial installation on a two-fold mission: testing the islanded mode and optimizing the control settings. Here’s a look back at a technical operation carried out with the utmost precision.

Islanding tests: analysis of autonomous behavior

The aim of this project was to simulate operation in island mode, i.e. temporary decoupling from the main grid. Several decoupling and recoupling sequences were carried out to assess the plant’s ability to maintain its critical parameters autonomously.

Problem identified: abnormal pressure rise

The tests revealed an untimely triggering of the bypass valve, whose late opening was generating an excessive pressure rise. An in-depth on-site analysis pinpointed the source of the problem.

Solution provided

Our technicians immediately implemented a technical correction, restoring the valve’s opening dynamics. As a result, the plant returned to normal operation in island mode, with smoother, safer transitions.

Control optimization: adjustment of PID parameters

In parallel, a second intervention was carried out on the steam pressure control loop, in particular when operating on a single production line.

Initial diagnosis: pumping phenomenon

Unstable control behavior, characterized by pumping, had been observed. This phenomenon impaired pressure consistency and threatened to disrupt the entire industrial process.

Adjustments made

Our specialists fine-tuned the PID parameters, enabling us to :

Significantly reduce oscillations,
Stabilize pressure regulation,
Improve overall plant performance.
