MicroNet MSM Protech

The MicroNet™ safety module is a safety PLC with built-in overspeed and over-acceleration protection, designed to safely shut down any steam, gas or hydroelectric turbine when it detects a safety event. Available with two doubly redundant trip relay outputs using 2-out-of-3 voted architecture, or with three independent non-voted trip relay outputs.

Product description and features

The MicroNet safety module is designed to be used as part of a MicroNet control system. This ProTech MSM model is a panel-mounted, high-voltage/high-voltage supply input, relay voted/voted input safety device for steam turbine overspeed protection.

High-resolution displays
Each module features a high-resolution 4.2” (107 mm) color display and keypad, allowing users to locally control configuration parameters, system status, inputs and outputs, as well as alarm, trip and overspeed logs.

Automatic overspeed test routine
As an option, the MSM can be configured to regularly perform an overspeed test on each trip module/solenoid, then record and report the test results. With this test routine, each module is tested in sequence using an internal frequency generator to emulate an overspeed condition.

Automatic test routines
As an option, the MSM can be configured to perform regular customized tests of each module/trigger solenoid, then record and report the test results. With this test routine, each module undergoes a programmed test sequence to simulate, test and record the results of each safety condition.

Acceleration/deceleration detection
As an option, the MSM can be configured to protect a turbine against high acceleration/deceleration events. The derivative of the speed signal is used to detect turbine acceleration/deceleration and issue an associated trip command.

MPU detection
The speed sensor input of each module uses special MPU open wire detection circuitry to validate that the MPU is correctly connected before turbine operation, and special speed loss detection logic to validate MPU functionality during turbine operation.

Resistance to sulfur contamination
Uses a special conformal coating material that has demonstrated excellent long-term protection against H2S and SO2 gases at levels classified in international standard IEC 721-3-3 1994 – environment class 3C2.
